Why test even without symptoms
Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and HIV are often silent early on, yet can still be passed to a partner and cause complications such as testicular inflammation, infertility or nerve problems. The right test depends on the type of exposure and when it happened; some tests must be repeated after a window period.

Do not self-treat with antibiotics
Antibiotics bought without a prescription can hide symptoms without killing the infection and add to antibiotic resistance — a particular problem with gonorrhoea. If the exposure was within the last 72 hours, ask about PEP for HIV straight away.

Frequently asked questions
When should I test after a risky encounter?
It depends on the infection. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea can be tested after about 1–2 weeks; syphilis and HIV need an early test and a repeat after the window period. If the exposure was within 72 hours, ask about HIV PEP immediately.
Are STD test results confidential?
Yes. Medical records are confidential and results are explained directly to you by the doctor.
Can gonorrhoea be cured?
Gonorrhoea (kencing nanah) can usually be treated with the correct antibiotics. A repeat test and treating your partner are important to avoid re-infection.
I have no symptoms. Do I still need a test?
Yes, if there was a risk. Many sexually transmitted infections cause no symptoms but can still spread and cause complications.
Do I need to tell my wife or partner?
The doctor will advise on the best way. Partners usually need testing or treatment so the infection does not come back.
