The window period: why a test may need repeating
Modern 4th-generation HIV tests detect both antibodies and antigen and pick up most infections within a few weeks. A test done too soon after exposure can still be falsely negative, so the doctor will advise when to repeat the test based on the date of exposure — often around 3 months for certainty.

How soon after exposure can I take an HIV test?
A 4th-generation test can detect most infections after 2–6 weeks. A repeat test after the window period (usually around 3 months for certainty) may be advised.
What is PEP?
