Signs of a prostate problem

• Waking at night to pass urine — typical of an enlarged prostate (BPH)
• Weak or interrupted flow, or a feeling the bladder is not empty
• Painful urination, pelvic pain or fever — possible prostatitis (inflammation or infection)
• Blood in the urine or semen, or prostate cancer in the family — needs assessment and further tests

The three common prostate conditions

Benign prostatic enlargement (BPH) is not cancer and is very common with age. Prostatitis is inflammation or infection and can affect younger men. Prostate cancer often has no symptoms early on, which is why men around 50 (earlier with a family history) are encouraged to discuss a PSA test with a doctor.

Prostate and sexual health

Prostate and erection problems often appear in the same age group, and some prostate treatments can affect erection or ejaculation. Discuss both with the doctor — see erectile dysfunction. Herbal “prostate” products sold online are not necessarily safe or registered and may delay an important diagnosis.
