Why the meningitis vaccine is required
Meningococcal disease is a bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and serious blood infection. The risk rises in very crowded places such as Makkah and Madinah, which is why the meningococcal vaccine is a requirement for umrah and hajj pilgrims.
Saudi requirements for umrah 1447H (2026)
- A meningococcal vaccine covering types A, C, Y and W (ACYW), taken at least 10 days before arriving in Saudi Arabia, with a vaccination certificate
- Conjugate ACYW vaccine: valid 5 years. Polysaccharide vaccine: valid 3 years. If the vaccine type is not stated on the certificate, it is treated as valid for 3 years only — so make sure your certificate is complete
- Influenza vaccine is recommended; proof of COVID-19 vaccination is requested for high-risk groups

Hajj: health screening before you go
Hajj involves long travel, heat, crowds and a lot of walking. Uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes, heart or kidney disease raises the risk of falling ill. The official Tabung Haji health examination follows Lembaga Tabung Haji and Ministry of Health procedures — follow the instructions in your offer letter or the THIJARI app. If you have a form to complete, WhatsApp a photo of it first. Malay: pemeriksaan kesihatan haji.

When should I take the umrah vaccine?
At least 10 days before departure so protection develops and the certificate is accepted. Earlier is better.
How long is the meningitis vaccine valid for umrah?
Under the Saudi Ministry of Health requirements for umrah 1447H (2026), the conjugate ACYW vaccine is valid for 5 years and the polysaccharide vaccine for 3 years. If the type is not stated on the certificate, it counts as 3 years only.
Should I also take the influenza vaccine?
It is recommended, especially for older pilgrims and those with chronic illness, because respiratory infections are common during umrah. At Klinik Etika the influenza vaccine is RM55, subject to stock.
